The Olympic Games




The Olympic games are world wide international sports events. The Olympic games originally started thousands of years ago in ancient Greece. The greek held thk god zeus. These games included racing, wrestlinh, and jumping contests.

The ancient Greeks said that sport was good exercises for the body. They also said that sport would help develop the mind and character. Thus, they  thought  that sport was as important as science. During  the 19th century, Europeans and Americans began to have the same idea about sport as the ancient Greeks did, so they agreed to establish sport organization.

While schools and universities in this century began to take sport seriously, the workers in town also did the same thing and founded sports organizations. At this time, the modern rules of many games including football, cricket, hockey, baseball, tennis, and many more were made.


Then, these games died out in AD394. In 1896 a Frenchman, baron pierre de Coubertin, started the modern Olympic games. He believed that international sport competition would make goodwill and peace between nations and improve the international relations.

The Olympic flag is a chainof five circles `in five different colours – blue, yellow, black, green, and red – on white background. the chain is a symbol of unity. Like the ancient  Olympic gsmes, the modern Olympic games are held every four years, except during the two world wars, 1914-1918 and 1939-1945.

At the modern Olympic games, people are usually interested in the strength and grace of competition in gymnastics. Track and field athletes also receive a lot of attention .

There are two groups of sportsmen, namely professionals and amateurs. A professional is a players who plays for money , while an amateur is a player who plays for enjoyment. There are many professional sportsmen and sportswomen, earning a living from sport.   

Wayang Kulit


The ` Wayang kulit` is a shadow  play. This show is very popular in java. The `Wayang kulit`  performance needs a screen, three or  four banana trees , puppets , Javanese musical  instruments  , Javanese musicians and singers , and a `Dalang` .at night three is a special lamp. Under the screen are the banana strees.

        The `Dalang` stick the handles of the puppets on these banana strees so the puppets can stand.  The puppets the `Dalang`  the Javanese musicians and singers , and the lamp are in front of the screen while the spectators are behind  the screen so during the show they can see the shadow of the puppets on the screen . the puppets are made of leather. There are two groups of puppets, good characters and bad . the good characters are on the right-hand side of the `Dalang` while the bad characters are on the left-hand side. During the show these two sides of characters fight againsteach other and at the end the good characters always win. It takes about nine hours to perform the `Wayang kulit`.

     The `Dalang` is the most important person in the whole show. He has several duties.  He moves the puppets , tells the story, imitates the dialogues of the characters, sings, and controls the musicians and the singers. Therefore, a `Dalang`  must be a very healthy man. He must be able to sit crooslegged during the show.

     The story of the `wayang kulit` performance is from either the `ramayana` or the `mahabrata`. These stories are actually ancient india stories. In `Ramayana` the hero is `Rama`. He leads the fight against the giant with ten faces called rahwana. A white monkey called hanoman helps him during the war. In `Mahabrata`  the good characters are the pandawa family. This family consist of five brothers,namely ; puntadewa, the oldest brothers, bratasena, harjuna, nakula, and sadewa. On the other hand, their counsins, the kurawa, are bad characters. The kurawa family consists of one hundred brothers, and the oldest one is suyudana or kurupati. These two families always quarrel and the winner is always the pandawa family.

Fact: The Young People Are Under Stress




Since the industrial revolution which happened a long time ago, things change so fast;  From the life style, technology, transportation, education, government and etc. these changes really gave big impact upon society especially for those who excperienced a life before and after revolution. As the result of the fast change, people from this time havMoreover, these stress not only must be faced by adults, but also by young people. The young people today, Compared to their parents when they were still young, are more under stress because of pressures that come from three different  areas; economy, education, and society.

                first of all the stress comes from economy area is the standard life style of modern era. because of the expansive life costs, young people have to be more economical in everything, for instance, the young people have to search the cheapest price when they want to buy something and if they don’t find the cheap one, eventough they really want it, they have to forget it.  Moreover  daily need is increasing along with the modern life; television, computer, handphone are daily need for young people of modern era but it doesnt mean all young people have it, to buy all of that they have to save their allowance or take part-time job and that means they get more stress from enduring their yearning and hard work.

Eventough Economy area really gives stress on young people today, but it is not the only one area. The improvement of education area in this era makes young people have to give all they have. For example, the difficulities level of education have been upgraded by government, Consequently, young people have to reduce their playing time which is really needed to refresh their mind and change it into study time. Moreover, because the graduation standard mark always raises year to year the young people must study hard and take some courses for example, math course and economy course, in order to graduate with a good mark so that they can continue their study onto next education level or be accepted to work.

And finally, The other area which give stress upon young people today is the society’s awareness about modern life. the society especially the old people will have high hopes upon them to improve the place in where the young people live. they want the young people to be better than they were in the past, as the result, the  young people feel more burdened because they have to try to fullfill those hope and as the improvement which happen everywhere, it’s more difficult for them to fullfill those hopes of society. furthermore, as the society aware that compared to the past, the modern era is more dangerous , they will make strict rules to prevent the young from being caught in trouble, for example, not to go particular place or to eat particular food. altough they did it to protect the young people but still they will feel chained and stressed .

To sum up, by observing the changes which happen year by year, we will know that the young people today feel more pressured than young people of the past. It’s not only because of economical issue, the educational matter and community life also give hard pressure on the young people today. the young people today are really under stress and the future young people will be more under stress than young people now.

Tips: How to Learn Foreign Language


Human as social beings need language to communicate their meaning and to keep their realationship warm, if there were no language it would be hard to keep in touch with other people.there are so much language in the world,for usually each country has its own language moreover there are also countries,besides national language have local language such indonesia that have local languge more than one hundred.area of communication is not limited to race,religion,and country, sooner or later human will need to communicate with people who use foreign language and in order to do so they have to learn the foreign language of people they communicate with. learning foreign language is not so hard if we follow these steps below.

            First of all is to have a strong will to learn the language. a will will take role as a motivator so that we can overcome obstacles we will face appearing during the process of learning and will be source of our strength, besisde that motivation will make the material and the theories seem to be more easy. a will also takes role as our goal, it means how skilled we want to be or have we reached the requirement we have to be. the goal can be various such as to be able to watch movie without looking to the subtitle or to be accepted to work in an international-level hotel.

The next step is to own a lot of vocabulries as our basic to build all aspect of a language because we will need a various vocabularies in every use of the language. to own vocabulary we have to categorize the vocabularies and know for example which one is adjective what adjective for and which one is adverb what adverb for.after that we have to memorize the vocabularies, the best way to memorize vocabulary is by reading text and look for the meaning of words we have found in the text, the more you read the more you will memorize the vocabularies, beside that you can memorize vocabularies by writing down vocabularies which  you think to be hard and make it as your own vocabularies.

The third step is to know the rules of the language and how to use it in the correct way as every language has its own usage and rule like grammar and culture,so if we want to learn a language we must know its grammar to construct a good and meaningful sentence because a wrong constructed sentence may cause missunderstand like an active sentence that is spoken or written as passive sentence for example”i ate rice” which is wrongly constructed as “i am eaten rice”the first sentence is a good sentence and its meaning is clear but the second sentence may make people confuse of its meaning because it is a wrongly constructed sentence of the first sentence. moreover mastering a languge without knowing its culture is dangerous for the wrong usage of words may make people offend. so in order to master a language we have to know when we may use slang words or when we must use formal words.

The most important of those steps is to practice our language which we want to master. to practice we can do it anywhere anytime and by using the way you want, for listening skill you can practice it by listening to music what you like sung in the language you want to master or watching movie you like and try to understand the story without using subtitle.and for speaking skill you can practice it by doing a lot of talking using the language such as speech it will be fastening you in learning the language, as speech needs a good speaking skill so the more you do it the more your speaking skill will be improved. beside speech you can also make conversations with your friend using the language and this way not only your speaking skill will be improved but also your confidence in using the language will be also improved as well.

            In summary, in order to master a new language we need to use an organized an structured system which will make us easier to learn the language. beside that having yearning is neccessary in learning a new language for it will have people to go on and not stop halfway. knowing and understanding words are as well important and are unseparable in learning language process. moreover because the usage of each language is different having awareness of the regulation of the language must be acquired. a lot of training is also important as preparation for the real use.and then as we will have to deal with foreign-language speaker sooner or later then  it is important for us in order to be safe from their deceit to master the language of people we deal with.   

Arts: Drasandhi, Not an Ordinary Drum Band



Bangkalan- that noon, Drasandhi (March of students and alumni of pon-pes Darul hikmah) is setting out for a play in a wedding ceremony, they (member of drasandhi) are in high spirit, for they are different; while majority of drum band groups in bangkalan city whose play are for money, this white-clothed-and-blue-panted drum band group plays for dakwah, Yes, their main and only purpose is dakwah

Since its first formed, Drasandhi has been like that, it doesn’t matter where, who, and when. If invited, it surely comes.  Drasandhi also plays for many events and not only for wedding ceremony, it was ever invited by the regent of bangkalan city in 2009 to enliven his campaign ceremony, and once again, its purpose is solely dakwah. 

Fortunately, the wings had a chance to interview the leader of this unique drum band group, Imamulmuttaqin jauhari,  here it is the interview:

Q: assalamu’alaikum

A: wa’alikum salam, have a seat

Q: thank you very much, busy?
A: yes, we are about to playing in one’s wedding ceremony in kwanyar

Q: may I ask some questions regarding drasandhi?
A: hmm….it’s okay, however just for 5 minutes, because we have to get going soon

Q: thanks, actually, I hear people said that this group’s purpose is dakwah, is that right?
A: absolutely right

Q: what does it mean? You mean this group doesn’t collect any money at all when invited?
A: of course not, we also collect money, but the money is just for covering vehicles, repairing the instrument, and expanding our pesanteren; we collect money, not for individual purpose, but for pesantren.

Q: ooh, what about dakwah? you just said that its purpose is dakwah.
A: dakwah. yes, we play for dakwah we play so that many students will come to learn drum band in this pesantren.

Q: learn drum band?
A: yes, this drumband will be bait for them, and when they actually learn drum band here, we also include religious lessons like fiqih, tasawwuf, and etc, so anyone learning drum band here not only gets arts lessons, but also gets religious lessons, it’s like throwing one stone for two birds.   

Q: does it give any result?
A: yes, since this drum band is formed, our yearly register student rises up to 200%.

Q: one more question, who is the coach?
A: the coach is me

Q: so, you are the one teaching them all how to use the instruments, aren’t you? Then do you have any experience before coaching drasandhi?
A: well, that’s another point why sometimes drasandhi is said to be unique, we get all of drum band knowledge self-taughtly; no one here has any experience in drum band, nor do I, we learn it our-selves.

     Drasandhi, despite the fact that it is from pesantren, has many awards; in 2007, it won third place of Bangkalan championship, in 2008, it won the first place in the same championship, in the next year it got the honor to play at the office of governor of east java in Surabaya, and ultimately, Drasandhi got the honor to play in the front of president in both the opening and the closing of pos-penas (week of sport festival for pesantren) in sidoarjo at 2010

Funny Story: First Preach


Nasreddin always wished himself to be an imam. He studied and practiced hard to be one. He tried to get a lot of knowledge and also practiced how to speak in front of a lot of people. He knew that it wouldn’t be easy. One day, he got an opportunity to give his first sermon.

   On his first day as the village’s imam, Nasreddin was seated on the raised bench, preparing to give a preach. Everyone was quite anxious to hear what he had to say. Nasreddin was very nervous. He wasn’t ready at all to give the preach. Then he tried to develop a conversation with them.

“Do you know what I am going to talk about?” he asked.
“If you don’t know what I am going to talk about, then I have nothing to tell you,” nasreddin replied.
He said that then he got up and left the mosque, leafing people behind him puzzled.

The next day, people gathered in the again. They were curious. They wanted to know what nasreddin was going to say. Nasreddin was back to his seat and the people were curiously waiting.
“Do you know what I am going to talk about?” he asked.
“no, we don’t know what I am going to talk about, then I have nothing to tell you,” nareddin replied.
He said that then he got up and left the mosque, leaving people behind him puzzled.

The next day, people gathered in the mosque again. They were curious. They wanted to know what nasreddin was going to say. Nasreddin was back to his seat and the people were curiously waiting.
“Do you know what I am going to tell you today?” nasreddin asked again.
“Yes we do, nasreddin’” they replied. Having learned from what had happened the day before, they didn’t say ‘no’ this time.
“well,” said nasreddin, “if you have already known what I am going to tell you, then I have nothing to tell you!”
He got up and left. The people gathering at the mosque were getting more confused.

On the third day, people gathering again in the mosque to listen to nasreddin preach. Nasreddin came, sat down and again he asked the same question.
“Do you know what I am going to tell you?”
These people wouldn't let nasreddin go away without giving a preach. So, some of them say ‘yes, we do’ and some others said ‘No, we don’t.
“Well, in that case, those who know should tell those who do not know, “he replied while walking out of the mosque once again.

Funny Story: Until When?


Nasreddin was the only man in his village who had the opportunities to travel to other places. As a result, people often came to him to ask question. However, there was a group of people who were jealous with him. They always tried hard to make nasreddin look bad and stupid. They always come to him to ask difficult questions. Fortunately, nasreddin always managed to answer their question smartly.

   One day they gathered in one house to devise a plan to make nasreddin look bad. When they came up with the smart idea, they decided to go to nasreddin’s house. They would ask abstract question to him.

“nasreddin, in your opinion, how long will people continue to be born and to die?”
That difficult and abstract question didn’t influence nasreddin. He sighed, turned his head around, and watched them one by one.

“That’s an easy question, “he said.
“Once someone has given me a more difficult question, “he replied.
“Really?” one of them said, they got disturbed by nasreddin’s remark.
“If that’s easy, so what’s the answer?” the other one got curious.
“Your question is ‘how long will people continue to be born and to die?’ right?” nasreddin repeated the question.

“Yes, so what’s your answer?” they asked again impatiently.
“Until, of course the heaven and the hell are completely full.”

Funny Story: Climbing up the roof


It was one rainy day in the evening. Nasreddin and his family were sitting in the living room, talking to each other about this and that.
“What’s this?” nasreddin’s wife got surprised.
“oh no! it’s water. The roof’s leaking, “nasreddin added.
“you’ve got to fix it tomorrow morning, “his wife said.
“ok, I will, “nasreddin answered.
The nex morning he borrowed a ladder from his neighbor.
Actually, he was afraid of height. He climbed the ladder very carefully with great difficulty.
“Why am I doing this? Why didn’t I ask someone to do it?” he said to himself.
Just after he was about to start working, he heard someone knock at the door. Ther wasn’t anybody at home at that time. His wife was going to the market. So he looked down from the adge of the roof and saw a stranger in front of the door.
“knock, knock, knock…….
“I am up here, “nasreddin shouted.
The man looked up the roof, trying to find where nasreddin is.
“What do you want?” nasreddin asked. Nasreddin did not recognize the man, he was not his relative nor his neighbor.
“pleae, come down. I have something important to talk to you,” the man replied.
Trembling, nasreddin climbed down the ladder very carefully. He thought before that climbing down was easy, but it wasn’t. it took him quite long to climb down the ladder luckily the man waited patiently.
Once he got to the ground, he asked the man once again.
“What do you want?”
The man kept quiet for some scond then said, “some money, please.”
“what??” nasreddin replied.
“could you share some money with me?” the man repeated. Nasreddin was speechless. He thought for a moment.
“Ok. But you have to come up there with me, “he said. Again, nasreddin climbed up the ladder. He climbed first, and the beggar was behind him. Both of them were running out of breath and tired. Once they got to the roof top, nasreddin turned to the man and said, “I don’t have any money.”

Tips: When Children Lie


When children lie to their parents, the parents may feel angry, they may also think that their children are lack of respect to them, however it is important to know that lying is one of human’s common feature. Rather than focus on the specific lies of children, parents should more focus on the purpose of their lies because all behavior is purposeful

     Thing may get worse if parents confront their lying children in a bad way, it may cause children feel unsafe and become more deceptive. It is recommended that parents do not use words lying to their children, instead, they should phrase it, like “you need to be honest with me”, if they do, the children may be open.

     Things that cause children lie are various such feel afraid of something, or lack self-confidence.  However, if parents talk to their children In a gentle way, it may help them to uncover the truth.

     Lying may be often found in teenagers, for in this period of age teens search ways to separate from their parents through many ways such acting guarded around parents and covering truth. Using appropriate approach and parameters of their behavior can stick them out of lying. 

     Some guidelines for parents to deal with lying children are to know that all behavior is purposeful, lying is inevitable for children. Avoid using word lying, and children may feel embarrassed to tell the truth.
In case children are pathological liars, who also do many bad behavior, professional treatment may be needed

Did You Know: A Bad Relationship With Mom May Lead To Weight Gain

A new study found that kids having bad start relationship with their mom are more likely to end up being fat as what had been found on 977 children who were born 1991 and enrolled in the study of early child care and youth development. The children having poor relationship with their mother in toddlerhood have more than twice to end up being obesity by age 15.  

           Another finding is that toddlers who had bad relationship with their mother are more likely to become obesity by age of 4 ½. This study led by Sarah Anderson suggests that the root of problem lies in the brain, having to do with emotion and nerve system.

           Sarah also states that two factors of obesity having to do with parenting, because a child will respond to the way of parenting through their pattern of eating and sleeping which are two factors of obesity Rather than count on diet, improving relationship in early childhood may help reduce to be obesity

Did You Know: Insomnia May Boost Heart Attack Risk


A study published in Monday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation found that insomnia has something to do with heart attack, they have done surveys to more than 50000 adults, and the result is people who has trouble to sleep or stay late have tendencies to have a heart attack, and so do for those who sleep but still feel not-well.
            Even so, further research is still needed, say Dr. Lars Erik Laugsand, an internist in the public health department of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology Cardiologist Suzanne Steinbaum, who directs the Women and Heart Disease program at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City. This is to see how sleep is related with heart attack and reduce the risk. Laugsand, also suggests that metabolism or blood-vessel health such as inflammation, may be involved.
            National Center on Sleep Disorders Research points that age is involved in insomnia problem, what’s more, roughly one-third of American have occasional symptoms. However its treatment is not well developed yet, Susan Zafarlotfi, clinical director of the Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders at Hackensack University, she also advices that this problem to be further researched.

How to Write news; have you ever think about it?
Well, actually writing news is not so different from writing any article, yet, the language may somewhat distinct. some characteristics of news language are like the followings

K I S S
This stands for Keep It Short and Simple. It is used in a book called The Newspapers Handbook, a useful guide for students of journalism, which points out that short sentences are better for news. Broadsheet newspapers usually have sentences of 30 - 35 words; tabloids and local papers normally carry shorter sentences of 16 - 20 words. Stay as close to popular speech as you can, and keep to familiar and simple.

 Reading for Speed
 Everything about a newspaper is set up to enable you to read it fast.
Sentences and headlines are short, crossheads between paragraphs break the story down into bite-size
pieces, columns are narrow and easy to read. Words should be short too.

Never Use Three Words When One Will Do
*      Here are some phrases which you would rarely see in a newspaper 
                                In the near future
                                In the first instance
                                On the subject of
                                In the small hours
                                In consequence of newspaper
Don’t Repeat Yourself
Keep things short by making sure of the following:
*      Don’t use two words which mean the same - eg. uniquely special, important essentials, final outcome.
*      Try not to repeat a word in the same sentence.
*      Avoid words like very, quite, rather - they’re unnecessary and don’t add anything to the meaning.

Use Active Verbs
*      ‘Burglars took the corgi’ works better than ‘The corgi was taken by the burglars’ - and it’s shorter.

Did You Know: Online Games Can Influence What Kids Eat


A study finds the relationship between online games which advertises food or with the pattern of children’s eat. The games induce children to buy the product which is displayed when the children are playing the games.
The study led by Jennifer Harris, director of Marketing Initiatives at the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University found that many children are accessing website providing advergame (game which advertises a product) which is provided by food companies, leading the children to buy their product.
The researchers, accompanied by companies who voluntarily pledged to tailor advertising toward healthier foods for kids under the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI), found that about 1.2 million kids like to access advergame-providing websites, chlidren access 88% more times on these sites than on other sites which does not include advergame.
Then, harris and his companion made an experiment on the impact of these advergame towards children aged around seven to 12 by six games; two featuring junk food; two featuring healthy food, and two have no food advertisement, and the result is that:
1. They eat in equal amount of food but with different pattern
2. Children playing healthy food advergame eat 50% more healthy food than those who play unhealthy food advergame.
3. Children playing unhealthy food advergame eat 56% more unhealthy food than those who play the healthy one, and 16% more than those in the control group.
the study implies that advertising game gives influence towards children. Thus, everyone responsible for the children must be aware of this.

Tips: Stop Snoring Naturally


If you have trouble with snoring, there are some tips to stop it. one of the tips is to refrain from sleeping on your back as this position can disturb breathing, instead sleep on your side, and maintain this position by putting pillow at your back while sleeping. Another tips is to feel relax before going to bed as stress is atriggering factor.

Things that make it worse is smoking, as cigarette contains chemicals that can distort the flow of our breathing. And also alcohol is one of the causes of snoring, refrain from drinking alcohol before sleeping as alcohol make our muscles relax even our tongue and throat.

Did You Know: Soft drinks linked to violent tendencies in teens


Studies in U.S link violent in teens with soda or soft drinks, a study suggests that soda consumption is just ‘red flag’ for something is wrong, and not direct cause, or it can be because of poor parenting. Researchers have asked many students, linking soda consumption with weapon and behavior the result is that:

Teens who drink 14 cans soda or more in a week
-> 43% of them carried weapon at some point, 27% of them act violently towards their romantic partner, and 59% of them act violence toward peers.

Teens who drink 1 can soda or less a week
-> 23% carry weapon, 15% act violently towards romantic partner, 35% act violence toward peers

And also teens who drink lot of soda tend to be aggressive towards their siblings (45%). Those who drink soda are more likely to use cigarette and alcohol.

Researchers say teens who drink soda lack of nutrient, affecting their behavior, but Alan Manevitz, a psychiatrist with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City said "There's no definitive explanation that this explains how or if this might affect behavior,"

Tips: Curing Headache


If you are suffering from headache, you can try the tips below. This tip is taken from Islamic treatment book composed by imam Jalaluddin As Suyuthi.
1. Take a wolf’s skin. Wrap your head with the skin and tie it up. Insyaallah your headache will be gone soon 
2. Prepare wheat flour. Mix the wheat flour with vinegar. Wrap your head with that.
3. Take a rooster’s bile. Get its oil and lubricate the head with the oil.
4. Get a pumpkin. Take its water. Drink some of the water and also wash the head with the water. 
5. Get rose water and rose oil. Mix it with vinegar with the same amount. After that take cotton cloth and dowse it into the mixed ingredient. Then put the cotton on your head. The headache will be a history insyaallah.

Story for Kids: Like My Father’s


Mr. Jim goes to a barber shop every month to have a haircut.
He sometimes takes his little son Philip with him.
Philip usually sits there to wait for his father.
At that time Philip often has his haircut at home.
Then, one day, mr. Jim says to his wife
“Philip is five now, so let him have his haircut at the barber’s next time”
He then takes Philip there the next day.
The barber puts Philip in the chair and says
“What hair style do you want?”

I. Introduction
1.1 Background of Study
In this modern era many people have become bilingualism or even multilingualism. This is because unlike in the past whose people rely heavily on books, people of modern era use other than books to be bilingualism. Modern technology has become very useful tools to for them to acquire second language. There are many products on language learning sold through internet such as Rosetta Stone and Tell Me More which use computer technology. Beside the language learning product, many blogs provide language learning starting from beginner level until advanced level, and this has been proved very useful for those who learn second language. Another one is television program like Dora the Explorer which use English and Indonesian language, this is very effective for children.      
            However, no matter what language people want to learn, for those who really don’t have any knowledge of the language they want to learn, they still need the language to be written in their native language so that they can understand the language system. Therefore, in order to do so a translator is absolutely needed.
            Translation always deals with two languages. But being able to speak in two languages is not a guarantee to be good translator. Translation is not only about changing the language a text into another language, there is more to it. However the basic requirement in translation is indeed to acquire the two languages and know the similarity and differences between the languages. if this requirement is not met, the translation is out of the hand.
            When talking about similarity and differences between languages, the term contrastive analysis always comes to surface. Contrastive Analysis is a branch in linguistics whose aim is to compare two languages and make a contrast between them.
            As these fields have a similarity which is dealing with two languages, the writer is interested to study this. Thus, the aim of this paper is to know the relation between translation and contrastive analysis and how contrastive analysis can be applied in translation   

II. Discussion
2.1 Contrastive Analysis
            In this section, it will be explained a few things about contrastive analysis. Literally, the meaning of contrastive analysis is to analyze the contrast element between two things. Yet, to find the contrast elements means to find the similar elements. Therefore, contrastive analysis is mostly used in language teaching. However, as the aim of this paper is not to explain how contrastive can be applied in language teaching, rather how contrastive analysis can be implemented in translation. Therefore, only things related with translation will be explained in here.
            Contrastive analysis in linguistics aims to find the differences between languages. Contrastive analysis in general term is an inductive investigative approach based on the distinctive elements in a language (Kardaleska, 2006). It is because languages have different rule such in grammar, phonology, and morphology. By knowing such differences ones will be able to understand the language better as well as improve the translation ability.
            Another reason why contrastive analysis is important in translation is because translation needs the competence in two languages, and also to know in which element the language is similar or different. For example in noun, languages around the world have different noun system, some of them have different form in singular and plural by adding morpheme like English, while others do not and repeat the noun instead as plural marker as in Indonesian language case.        
2.2 Translation
            In this section, the writer will explain translation. What the writer means by translation is not to explain the technique of translation, translation theory, and approaches in translation, rather the writer will explain the process in translation and where the boundary of contrastive analysis and translation lies.
            To begin with, what is translation? It has been explained above that translation is not simply to change the language of a text into another one. Translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text. (Newmark, 1988: 5). Another definition is by Catford (1965) Translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL). On the other hand, Larson defines translation in a much more complex way. Translation consists of studying the lexicon, grammatical structure, communication situation, and cultural context of the source language text, analyzing it in order to determine its meaning, and then reconstructing this same meaning using lexicon and grammatical structure which are appropriate in the receptor language and its cultural context. (Larson, 1984: 3).
            Reading the definition above, translation is a complex activity. It needs equality in term of meaning, structure, grammar. However, when languages have differences in those elements, shift is needed. Shift is one of translation techniques, however the writer will not explain in detail about shift in translation as stated above.
            To start with, in order to make a good translation, one has to make a deep analysis in the source text; the meaning, the grammar, the writer’s intention of the text and so on. The more one spends the time to analyze the text, the better the translation will be. Therefore, we can conclude that analyzing the text is the most important stage in translation activity.
            In analyzing the text, first we need to know what the text is about. Then we start to analyze the text; its structure, meaning, and context. After finishing doing this, next we have to transfer what we have analyzed and reconstruct it by using target language. In this process, we are bound to meet differences between source language and target language. Therefore, we have to construct the result of our analysis of source text using the rule of target language.
In the process of reconstructing, we have to pay attention to the differences of source language and target language such as in their noun, verb, and grammar. And here lies the boundary between contrastive analysis and translation. The function of contrastive analysis is to make a distinction between two languages while in translation knowing such distinction is crucial. Thus, contrastive analysis is surely applicable to translation especially in the reconstruction stage.



2.3 CA Implementation in Translation Activity
            As what has been explained above, the intersection between contrastive analysis and translation is in analyzing the distinctive elements between two languages. In the following section the writer will provide further explanation about this as well as example in implementing contrastive analysis to translation. However the writer will only takes two fields which are inflection and grammar as these two are the most common ones to be different in languages.
2.3.1 Nominal Inflection
English only knows two forms of noun; singular and plural. On the other hand, languages such Arabic has three forms; singular, dual and plural. In contrast with Arabic and english, Indonesian only has singular form, the only clue for plurality is either word repetition or or adding another lexicon. English expresses plural implicitly by creating patterns how to use –s and –es. Indonesian on the other hand expresses plural explicitly. No definite rules how to create a plural form of a word except by reduplicating it, e.g rumah-rumah, mobil-mobil.(azhar). In English, the class NOUN is associated with an inflectional category NUMBER. The plural suffix /-s/ may be added to the base form which is singular to convert it to plural. (Al-Jurf, 1990).

Knowing this, now we can apply this into translation. Below are the examples

Yesterday I bought a book                                         Kemarin aku membeli sebuah buku
My brother planted a tree                                           kakakku menanam sebuah pohon
In the examples above, the noun book and tree are translated into buku and pohon, in other words, singular into singular form. Look at the followings examples
Indonesia – English
Kucing-kucing itu mau kemana?                                Where are those cats going to?
Di hutan ada banyak pohon-pohon unik                     there are unique trees in forest.
Unlike the first examples, these two examples take plural forms, thus translated into plural form of target language. To sum up, knowing the contrastive elements in nominal system of languages really helps when translating a text
As a remembrance, English language has other ways to express plurality besides adding suffix –s. yet, it will not be explained here. The main aim of this section is to show how knowing distinctive elements of nominal system can be of help in translation.

2.3.2 Verbal Inflection
            In this section, we will discuss about contrastive analysis in verbal inflection and we will use Indonesia and English as the example. As we already know, English has number agreement system in its verb.  In English, verbs are not fully inflected for number. Only the present third person singular is marked for number. The present third person singular is the form used with singular nouns, with he, she, it and words for which these pronouns will substitute and with word groups, e.g.: He goes, She writes, It eats, The boy runs, One thinks.(al-jurf, 1990). On the other hand, Indonesian language has no agreement system in its verb. Therefore, when translating text from English into Indonesia and vice versa, we have to be careful with this.
Example: Indonesia – English
Dia selalu pergi ke sekolah setiap pagi            vs         mereka selalu pergi ke sekolah setiap pagi
He always goes to school every day                           they always go to school every day
In the first sentence, the subject ‘dia’ is third singular person, it is translated into ‘He’. The verb is ‘pergi’ which is translated into ‘goes’. While in the second one, the subject is in plural form. The languages have different feature for their verb system. Knowing this now we can apply it into translation.
Example:
Mereka mengetahui segalanya
Mereka (subject, plural) = they
 menegetahui (verb, must agree with the subject) = know/knows
segalanya = everything
Thus, the sentence will become ‘they know everything’, the verb ‘know’ agree with the subject ‘they’ which takes plural form. To conclude, knowing the difference of how each language takes the verbal form will help when translate a text.
2.3.3 Grammar
            Now we will discuss the difference between grammars of languages. We will emphasis on the word order. In this case we will take Japanese and Indonesia, because both languages are only different in grammatical rules, while in term of nominal and verbal system, they are pretty much the same.
Japanese and Indonesian have different word order. While Indonesia follows SVO pattern, Japanese follows SOV. The basic Japanese sentence structure is called subject-object-verb or "SOV." In Japanese the verb comes at the very end of the sentence, and the indication whether a sentence is positive or negative comes at the end of the verb (Kay, C and David Fine. 2002).
For example: saya makan jeruk
Saya                (subject)                      = watashi
Makan             (predicate)                   = tabemasu
Jeruk                (object)                        = mikan
            As we see above, saya is S, makan is V, and jeruk is O, this is a SVO pattern. If it is to be translated into Japanese, we have to change it into SOV pattern. Therefore, it will be saya jeruk makan. Then saya becomes watashi, jeruk becomes mikan, and makan becomes tabemasu.
Saya makan jeruk = watashi wa mikan o tabemasu
Look at the following example
Joni wa gakkou e ikimasu
In the sentence above, Joni is S, gakkou is O, and ikimasu is V. if it is to be translated into Indonesian, we have to know first the meaning of each word.
Joni                  (S)
Gakkou           (O)       = sekolah
Ikimasu           (V)       = pergi
After we know this, now we can translate it into Indonesian. As Indonesian follows SVO, thus we first change it into Indonesian pattern and will be joni (S) ikimasu (V) gakkou (O), after that we can translate it and become jon pergi ke sekolah.
How we translate this sentence into japanese?
Ibu membaca buku
ibu                   (S)       =          okaa-san
membaca         (V)       =          yondeimasu
buku                (O)       =          hon
First, we change the pattern, SVO becomes SOV. So it will be ibu buku membaca, Next, we translate it into Japanese, so it will be okaa-san hon yondeimasu, then put the necessary article in this case, particle ‘wa’ as subject marker, and particle ‘o’ as object marker. Thus, the sentence will be like this: okaa-san wa hon o yondeimasu.

III. Conclusion
            Contrastive analysis indeed can be applied in translation. Although Contrastive analysis is mainly for language teaching, their intersection is that both deal with two languages and both need the knowledge of distinctive elements in each language such as in their nominal and verbal inflection, and sentence structure. However, the explanation in this paper is still far from complete. Therefore, for those who are interested can study this further by using other approaches such as morphology.
